Rules

  1. Start at the designated entrance point of the maze.
  2. Move through open passages — up, down, left, or right (no diagonal movement).
  3. You cannot pass through walls.
  4. Reach the designated exit point to solve the maze.
  5. In timed variants, solve as quickly as possible.

Strategies

  • Wall Follower (Left/Right Hand Rule): Place one hand on the wall and keep it there as you walk. This guarantees finding the exit in any simply connected maze (one without loops or detached walls). Choose the left or right wall at the entrance and follow it consistently.
  • Tremaux's Algorithm: Mark each passage as you traverse it. If you reach a dead end, backtrack. If you reach a junction you have visited before, prefer unmarked passages. Never enter a passage marked twice. This works for all mazes, including those with loops.
  • Dead-End Filling: Before starting, visually identify and mentally block off all dead ends. Work backward from each dead end, filling corridors until you reach a junction. The remaining unfilled path is the solution.
  • Look Ahead: Before committing to a path, scan ahead as far as you can see. Paths that quickly lead to obvious dead ends can be avoided.
  • Work from Both Ends: Trace the path simultaneously from the start and the exit. The solution is where the two paths meet. This can be faster because the search space is effectively halved.
  • Flood Fill (for digital mazes): Mentally or digitally "flood" the maze from the exit. The shortest path is the one reached by the flood front first.
History of Classic Maze

Mazes are among the oldest puzzles known to humanity, with roots stretching back thousands of years. The most famous ancient maze is the Labyrinth of Crete from Greek mythology, said to have been built by the architect Daedalus to contain the Minotaur. King Minos of Crete commissioned the structure, and the hero Theseus famously navigated it using a ball of thread given to him by Ariadne, unspooling it to mark his path and find his way back out.

Archaeological evidence of maze-like designs dates to at least 2000 BCE. Carved labyrinth patterns have been found on clay tablets in Pylos, Greece, on rock walls in Sardinia and Ireland, and in ancient Egyptian temples. However, most ancient labyrinths were unicursal — having a single winding path with no branches or dead ends — making them more of a meditative journey than a puzzle to solve. The shift to multicursal mazes (with branching paths and dead ends) came later.

Hedge mazes became popular among European aristocracy during the Renaissance. The oldest surviving hedge maze is at Hampton Court Palace in England, commissioned by William III in the 1690s. These physical mazes became fashionable garden features, with notable examples at Versailles, Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, and Villa Pisani in Italy. Walking through them became a social amusement for the nobility.

In the 20th century, mazes transitioned to paper and screen. Maze puzzle books became popular children's entertainment, and mazes appeared in early video games like "Amazing Maze" (1976) and "Pac-Man" (1980). The mathematical study of mazes contributed to graph theory and algorithm design — maze-solving algorithms like depth-first search, breadth-first search, and A* pathfinding became foundational concepts in computer science. Today, mazes remain a staple of puzzle books, escape rooms, corn mazes (a major agricultural tourism attraction in the United States), and video games.
