Strategies

History of Reaction Timer

Measuring human reaction time has been a subject of scientific interest since the mid-19th century. Dutch physiologist Franciscus Cornelis Donders conducted pioneering experiments in the 1860s, distinguishing between simple reaction time (responding to a single stimulus) and choice reaction time (responding differently to different stimuli). He used a device called a chronoscope, which could measure intervals down to about one millisecond.

Sir Francis Galton set up a public reaction-time testing station at the 1884 International Health Exhibition in London, where thousands of visitors paid to have their reflexes measured. This is one of the earliest instances of reaction testing as public entertainment rather than pure science. Galton collected data from over 9,000 participants, creating one of the first large-scale datasets on human cognitive performance.
