Blackjack

Blackjack, also known as Twenty-One, is the most widely played casino card game in the world. The player competes against the dealer, trying to build a hand whose value is as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. Number cards are worth their face value, face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10, and Aces can be worth 1 or 11. A "blackjack" — an Ace plus a 10-value card dealt as the initial two cards — is the best possible hand.

Rules

1. The game uses one or more standard 52-card decks.
2. Each player and the dealer receive two cards. Both player cards are face-up; the dealer has one face-up and one face-down (the "hole card").
3. Card values: 2-10 are face value, J/Q/K are worth 10, Ace is worth 1 or 11 (whichever benefits the hand).
4. A hand's value is the sum of its cards. A "soft" hand contains an Ace counted as 11; a "hard" hand does not.
5. The player acts first with these options:

• Hit: Take another card.
• Stand: Keep the current hand.
• Double Down: Double the bet, take exactly one more card, then stand.
• Split: If the first two cards have the same value, split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet.

1. If the player's hand exceeds 21, they "bust" and lose immediately.
2. After the player stands, the dealer reveals the hole card and must hit on 16 or below and stand on 17 or above.
3. If the dealer busts, the player wins. Otherwise, the hand closest to 21 wins. A tie is a "push" (bet returned).
4. A natural blackjack (Ace + 10-value on the first two cards) typically pays 3:2.

Strategies

• Basic Strategy: A mathematically derived chart tells the optimal action (hit, stand, double, split) for every combination of player hand vs. dealer upcard. Following basic strategy reduces the house edge to roughly 0.5%.
• Hard Totals: Always hit on 8 or below. Always stand on 17 or above. Hit on 12-16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher; stand when the dealer shows 2-6.
• Soft Totals: With a soft 17 (Ace+6) or below, always hit or double. With soft 18, stand against dealer 2, 7, or 8; double against 3-6; hit against 9, 10, or Ace.
• Splitting: Always split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s. Split 2s, 3s, 6s, and 7s against dealer 2-7.
• Doubling Down: Double on 11 against any dealer card except Ace. Double on 10 against dealer 2-9. Double on 9 against dealer 3-6.
• Bankroll Management: Set a budget before playing. Avoid chasing losses. Consistent bet sizing is more sustainable than progressive systems.

The origins of Blackjack are debated, but card games with the goal of reaching a target number have existed for centuries. The Spanish game "Veintiuna" (Twenty-One) is referenced in a story by Miguel de Cervantes written between 1601 and 1602, making it one of the earliest documented predecessors. Similar games existed in France ("Vingt-et-Un") and Italy ("Sette e Mezzo," which used a target of 7.5).

The game arrived in North America with French colonists in the 18th century. When gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931, casinos introduced a special promotion to attract players: a hand containing the Ace of Spades and a black Jack (Jack of Clubs or Spades) paid 10:1. Though the bonus was eventually discontinued, the name "Blackjack" stuck.

The modern era of Blackjack strategy began in 1956 when mathematicians Roger Baldwin, Wilbert Cantey, Herbert Maisel, and James McDermott published "The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack" in the Journal of the American Statistical Association, the first mathematically sound basic strategy. In 1962, Edward O. Thorp expanded on their work in his groundbreaking book "Beat the Dealer," which introduced card counting to the public and demonstrated that skilled players could gain an edge over the house. This led to casinos adopting multi-deck shoes and frequent shuffling to combat counters.

Today, Blackjack remains the most popular table game in casinos worldwide. The game has spawned numerous variants including Spanish 21, Pontoon, Blackjack Switch, and Progressive Blackjack. Online casinos offer virtual and live-dealer versions, and the game continues to be studied by mathematicians and computer scientists for its rich strategic depth.
