Rules

1. Setup: Shuffle a standard 52-card deck. Turn one card face-up.
2. Guess: The player predicts whether the next card will be higher or lower in rank than the current face-up card.
3. Reveal: Turn over the next card.
4. Result: If the guess is correct, the newly revealed card becomes the current card and the player guesses again. If incorrect, the game ends (or a life is lost, depending on the variant).
5. Ties: If the next card is the same rank, the result depends on the variant — it may count as a loss, a push (neutral), or the player may choose.
6. Card Rankings: Standard ranking from low to high: A-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-J-Q-K (Ace is low). Some variants have Ace high or allow the player to choose.
7. Scoring: The score is typically the number of consecutive correct guesses. Some versions award increasing points for longer streaks.

Strategies

• Play the Odds: A 2 will almost certainly be followed by a higher card; a King will almost certainly be followed by a lower one. Middle cards (7, 8) are the most uncertain.
• Count Remaining Cards: If you know which cards have been played, you can calculate exact probabilities. For example, if a 7 is showing and three 8s have already appeared, "lower" becomes more likely.
• Risk Assessment: On middle-rank cards where the odds are close to 50/50, consider whether the potential reward justifies the risk.
• Streak Management: In versions with a cash-out option, consider taking your winnings when the odds become unfavorable rather than risking a long streak on a coin flip.

The concept of guessing higher or lower has existed as long as playing cards themselves — from the 15th century onward, simple betting games based on card comparison were common across Europe. The formalized game of Hi-Lo is documented in various card game compendiums from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The game gained massive television exposure through the American game show "Card Sharks," which premiered on NBC in 1978 and was hosted by Jim Perry. Contestants had to predict whether successive cards would be higher or lower, with cash prizes increasing for each correct guess. The show ran in various incarnations through 2001, with revivals in 2019. A similar format appeared in the UK as "Play Your Cards Right" (1980-2003), hosted by Bruce Forsyth.

In the digital age, Higher or Lower has become a staple of casual gaming. The website "The Higher Lower Game" (created by Google Trends in 2016) adapted the mechanic to search data — players guess which of two terms has more Google searches. This viral web game demonstrated the format's versatility beyond playing cards.
