War (Card Game)
War is one of the simplest card games, typically played by two players.
About War (Card Game)
War is one of the simplest card games, typically played by two players. Each player flips the top card of their deck simultaneously, and the player with the higher card takes both cards. When both cards are equal, a "war" is declared — each player places additional cards face down and flips one more face up, with the winner taking all the cards. The game continues until one player holds all 52 cards. War requires no strategy or decision-making, making it purely a game of chance — ideal for young children learning card values.
How to play War (Card Game)
Rules
- Shuffle a standard 52-card deck and deal all cards evenly between two players (26 each). Players do not look at their cards.
- Both players simultaneously flip the top card of their deck face up.
- The player with the higher card wins the round and takes both cards, placing them at the bottom of their deck.
- Card ranking (low to high): 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace. Suits are irrelevant.
- If both cards are equal, War is declared:
- Each player places three cards face down (the "stakes").
- Each player flips one more card face up.
- The higher face-up card wins all cards on the table (the two tied cards, the six face-down cards, and the two new face-up cards).
- If the new face-up cards also tie, another war begins on top of the existing one.
- If a player runs out of cards during a war, they lose (or in some variants, they use their last card as the face-up card).
- The game ends when one player has all 52 cards.
Variants
- Three-Player War: Deal the deck among three players. When two cards tie, only those two players go to war.
- Speed War: Players flip cards as fast as possible rather than simultaneously.
- War with Strategy: After each flip, players may choose which card to play from a small hand (typically 3-5 cards), adding a strategic element.
- Casino War: A casino version where players bet on the outcome of each comparison against the dealer.
Notes on Gameplay
- Since War is entirely random, games can vary enormously in length. Some games end in minutes; others can theoretically last hundreds of rounds.
- Some games can enter infinite loops if the card recycling order creates a repeating pattern. Many implementations shuffle the won cards before placing them at the bottom to prevent this.
History of War (Card Game)
War is one of the oldest and most widespread children's card games, though its exact origins are unknown. The game appears in card game compendiums dating back to the early 19th century, and it likely predates written records by a considerable period, as its simplicity suggests it could have emerged wherever playing cards were available.
The game's global reach is remarkable. It exists in nearly every culture that uses standard playing cards, often under different names: "Bataille" in France, "Krieg" in Germany, "Vojna" in Russia, and similar names across dozens of languages. This universality suggests either very early spread or independent invention — a natural consequence of the simple idea "higher card wins."
War gained particular popularity as a children's first card game because it teaches card ranking without requiring reading, counting beyond simple comparison, or strategic thinking. The game has been a childhood staple in English-speaking countries since at least the Victorian era, and it remains one of the first card games many children learn.
The casino version, Casino War, was introduced in the 1990s and became one of the simplest table games in casinos. It retains the basic comparison mechanic but adds betting and a tie resolution where the player can choose to "surrender" (losing half their bet) or "go to war" (doubling their bet). Despite its simplicity, Casino War can be found in most major casinos worldwide.
