Set is a card game of visual perception and pattern recognition. The deck contains 81 unique cards, each displaying symbols that vary across four attributes: number (1, 2, or 3), shape (diamond, squiggle, or oval), shading (solid, striped, or empty), and color (red, green, or purple). A "Set" is a group of three cards where, for each attribute, all three cards are either all the same or all different. Players race to identify Sets among cards laid face-up on the table.

How to play Set

Rules

  1. Each card has four attributes, each with three possible values:
  • Number: 1, 2, or 3 symbols
  • Shape: Diamond, squiggle, or oval
  • Shading: Solid, striped, or empty
  • Color: Red, green, or purple
  1. 12 cards are dealt face-up on the table.
  2. Players simultaneously search for a "Set" — three cards where each of the four attributes is either all the same or all different across the three cards.
  3. When a player spots a Set, they call it out and take the three cards.
  4. Three new cards are dealt to replace the taken ones.
  5. If no player can find a Set among 12 cards, 3 additional cards are dealt (bringing the total to 15).
  6. The game continues until the deck is exhausted and no more Sets can be found.
  7. The player with the most Sets wins.

Valid Set Examples

  • Three cards with (1 red solid diamond), (2 red solid diamond), (3 red solid diamond): number is all different, the rest are all the same. Valid Set.
  • Three cards with (1 red solid diamond), (2 green striped squiggle), (3 purple empty oval): every attribute is all different. Valid Set.

Invalid Set Example

  • Three cards with (1 red solid diamond), (2 red solid squiggle), (3 green solid oval): color is not all same nor all different (red, red, green). Not a valid Set.

Strategies

  • Focus on One Attribute: Pick two cards and determine what the third card must be for each attribute. Then look for that specific card on the table.
  • All Different Sets: Sets where all four attributes are different are often easier to spot because the cards look very distinct from each other.
  • All Same Sets: Look for groups of three cards sharing one or more attributes, then check if the remaining attributes satisfy the rule.
  • Systematic Scanning: Rather than random searching, work through pairs of cards methodically. For any two cards, exactly one card completes the Set.
  • Edge Cards: Focus on cards with unusual attribute combinations that appear less frequently, as they participate in fewer possible Sets and are easier to track.
  • Practice Pattern Recognition: Speed improves dramatically with practice. Experienced players develop intuitive recognition of Set patterns without consciously checking each attribute.
History of Set

Set was invented in 1974 by Marsha Falco, a population geneticist at Cambridge University. While studying patterns of gene combinations in German Shepherd dogs, Falco represented genetic data on cards with different symbols. She noticed that finding interesting combinations among the cards was an engaging challenge, and the game of Set was born from this scientific work.

Falco initially played the game informally with friends and family for over a decade before her children encouraged her to publish it commercially. She founded Set Enterprises and released the game in 1991. It quickly gained a devoted following, particularly among mathematicians, educators, and puzzle enthusiasts. The game won multiple awards, including the Mensa Select award in 1991.

The mathematics of Set has made it a favorite subject of study in combinatorics and finite geometry. The 81 cards can be mapped to the four-dimensional vector space over the finite field with three elements, GF(3)^4. In this framework, a Set corresponds to a line in the geometry, and the problem of finding Sets relates to deep questions in combinatorics about cap sets — the largest collection of points containing no three in a line. The "cap set problem" remained open for decades until a breakthrough in 2016 by Ellenberg and Gijswijt using the polynomial method.

Set has become a staple of math education, used to teach concepts from logic and combinatorics to abstract algebra. National and international Set competitions are held regularly, with the fastest players able to identify Sets in just a few seconds. A daily Set puzzle is published online, and the game has been adapted into numerous digital versions. The game's simple rules, deep mathematical structure, and engaging gameplay have made it one of the most acclaimed card games of the modern era.
