Simon was invented by Ralph H. Baer, often called the "Father of Video Games," and Howard J. Morrison. Baer, who had previously created the Magnavox Odyssey (the first home video game console), developed the concept in the mid-1970s. The game was manufactured by Milton Bradley (now part of Hasbro) and launched at Studio 54 in New York City in 1978 in a memorable disco-themed launch party, reflecting the pop culture of the era.
The game was inspired by an Atari arcade game called "Touch Me" (1974), which had a similar sequence-matching mechanic but was poorly received due to its harsh buzzer sounds and unattractive design. Baer and Morrison refined the concept, giving each button a pleasant musical tone (using notes from a bugle call) and bright, appealing colors. The result was far more engaging, and Simon became one of the best-selling electronic games of all time.
Simon was a cultural phenomenon in the late 1970s and 1980s, becoming one of the most recognizable electronic toys ever produced. It sold millions of units and spawned numerous variations, including Simon 2 (1979), Pocket Simon (1980), Super Simon (1979, with an additional mode using the four quadrants independently), and Simon Swipe (2014).
